TORONTO - A celebration of the 40-year anniversary of mankind's "giant leap" to the moon was tinged with some regret Monday over Canada's missed opportunity to be the first to Lunar walk.
It's sad that Canadian nationalism sometimes takes on such a whiny demeanour. In terms of contributions to space research, both in terms of providing expertise and personnel, we rank 3rd behind the US and the USSR/Russia. That's a record to be proud of, not one to lament just because we don't have the monetary resources of the United States. It's like listening to someone break into tears just because we can't afford to float our own aircraft carrier battlegroup or field a 3000-tank armoured force.
This doesn't even make my list. I suppose we could have done it, but would likely be Illegally crossing the Border into Mexico in search of a better life.
just one more time that the americans got what they want, they sell us some usless missile system, we pay them for it, then send them the best people and tech we have, did we ever get the better part of that deal. every time i think of the AVRO and what we as canadians could have had, it really %$#$%^%%^ me off
Could have, would have, should have.... we didn't, get the hell over it.
Some in the group lamented that Canadians might have been first on the moon if the Avro Arrow project had survived.
The innovative plan to build a supersonic jet was cancelled a decade before the auspicious Apollo 11 landing. The government of prime minister John Diefenbaker called off the project to build what some said would have been the world's fastest jets after pressure mounted about the cost to the public.
So because of this, they suspect we missed our chance to goto the moon? I'm sure if a lot of things were different in history a lot of other things could have happened.
Honestly, who really cares?
You win some, you lose some.... Apathy is the Canadian way, not bitching and moaning.
Oh boo frigging hoo, why'I'oughta'kick'yer'in'thar'nards! *shakes fist*
