Out of all the sad laments of what we could have done, that's one of the most pathetic.

I'm sorry but this a pretty lame story. "We could have been the first on the moon". Nuh-uh. If not the Americans then it would have been the Russians.

It's sad that Canadian nationalism sometimes takes on such a whiny demeanour. In terms of contributions to space research, both in terms of providing expertise and personnel, we rank 3rd behind the US and the USSR/Russia. That's a record to be proud of, not one to lament just because we don't have the monetary resources of the United States. It's like listening to someone break into tears just because we can't afford to float our own aircraft carrier battlegroup or field a 3000-tank armoured force.

This doesn't even make my list. I suppose we could have done it, but would likely be Illegally crossing the Border into Mexico in search of a better life.

The American military wanted to buy the Avro initially. It was the defense industry that undermined the Avro project.

From the report:

$1:
"It was a frustrating moment," said Jim Floyd, the chief designer of the Avro Arrows. "It could have been us."

Oh boo frigging hoo, why'I'oughta'kick'yer'in'thar'nards! *shakes fist*

Could have, would have, should have.... we didn't, get the hell over it.

$1:
Some in the group lamented that Canadians might have been first on the moon if the Avro Arrow project had survived.

The innovative plan to build a supersonic jet was cancelled a decade before the auspicious Apollo 11 landing. The government of prime minister John Diefenbaker called off the project to build what some said would have been the world's fastest jets after pressure mounted about the cost to the public.

So because of this, they suspect we missed our chance to goto the moon? I'm sure if a lot of things were different in history a lot of other things could have happened.

Honestly, who really cares?

You win some, you lose some.... Apathy is the Canadian way, not bitching and moaning.
