A century after he scribbled the simple but poignant stanzas of In Flanders Fields, John McCrae is being honoured with two statues.

I can't say that I'm very impressed by that bronze. Is it my imagination or did they make more poignant, more emotive memorials eighty-ninety years ago? The Canadian memorial of the Second Battle of Ypres, the sculptures at Vimy, The Royal Newfoundland Regiment's baying Caribou at the Somme all bring a tear to the eye. This one of McCrae is a bronze of a guy.

It almost looks corny, considering what our artists are really capable of.

It doesn't measure up (to me, anyway). Look at the sort of memorial that our people are capable of:

I totally agree, with what we were (are) capable of the McCrae statue looks chintzy....but, on the positive side, they finally got around to erecting them....maybe a century or so late but.....

    Agreed.

We are capable of much more on both counts.

I agree that it doesn't look that good, but a bronze gets better with age.

The Samuel de Champlain statue in Qubec City, at 117 years old, looks great... Charles de Gaulle, not so good.

Maybe, that is the true measure of the men.
