In what is believed to be a first in Newfoundland and Labrador, foreign workers have been brought in to work at a fish plant in the province because of a shortage of available labour.

In an area that does have such high unemployment, how is this possible......and what is considered a decent rate of pay? For the Thais, if they are getting this pay rate, they will think they've struck a gold mine.

I wonder how the Newfies will react when they bring a Ladyboy back to their place and realize they got more than they bargained for. 8O

That's pretty pathetic, and just shows the EI system is being really abused.

But everyone likes to scream and shout at the government.

How come Andy isn't here screaming to send those Asians packing while complaining that the jobs need to pay a living wage to attract the EI abusers - like about $25/hr or so. 8O

The EI thing has been used for far too long to prop up unsustainable economies. I am unlikely to ever claim EI but I have been paying into it for years now.

It should just be for temp cash for the unemployed, not Atlantic Canada's major cash import.

A summer factory job I had some years back here in Halifax had me working with about 4-5 Uzbeks who didn't speak English. They were hard workers though and I was nominated to be their guide to show them what to do because I have a thing for languages. I even made up some Cyrillic phonetic keyword pages for them to use to be able to pronounce pallet-jack, forklift and the like... Worked out well... they were all professionals back home, better money for them doing this here though. Still, I know plenty of locals who, while perhaps not deserving, should be PERSUADED to go off benefits and work some!
