Students in the Toronto Catholic District School Board will now be required to sing O Canada out loud instead of standing in silence while a pre-recorded version of the national anthem plays.

If you play it anyway, why not?

    Nothing like mandated patriotism.

They MUST pray too, right? It's the Catholic school board.

So people start remembering what fucking country they live in!

Personally, I'm getting sick of schools and school boards dumping the anthem because some fucking immigrant doesn't think their precious little bastard should have to endure hearing the anthem of the country they CHOSE to live in.

It's about damn time people started showing a little more pride in Canada and in being Canadian. If singing the anthem before class each day is too much to ask of one's kid(s), well then maybe Canada has done all it can for them and it's time for them to move on, whether they were born here or not.

It's the National Anthem for cryin' out loud. It's not like we're forcing kids to join scouts as a primer for mandatory military service where we all genuflect before a portrait of "Fearless Leader" every morning and evening whilst chanting "Harper Harper! Uber Alles!".

Canada may not be "the perfect" place to live, but compared to everywhere else, it's still a great place to live. And I think Canadians overall need to start remembering that.

    /end rant

Do they have to sing if they're exchange students?

This caused a problem at my school. One teacher became angry when an exchange student from Germany wasn't reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of each school day.

I don't necessarily think they should be forced to take part. But they should at least stand and show the proper respect.
When one of my school's had a day exchange with a school in Grosse Pointe MI, although I didn't know the US anthem by heart, I still stood at for the anthem and accorded it the respect I would have expected our American guests to show ours, which they did.
No one expected me to recite the Pledge of Allegiance though :D but I still stood up while they recited it.

We would sing it only in assemblies. I never did - I don't like forced patriotism. There are occasions where it's entirely right to sing the anthem - national events and such. But same with this bullshit of confounding professional sports and the singing the anthem. A bunch of Europeans with their hands on their hearts - what a joke. Keep the anthem for national occasions, including opening the provincial legislatures and city councils. Don't just shove it down student's throats.

PA9, I agree, play it, force them to stand, do the moment of silence, all that good stuff. But forcing someone to sing it is a step too far.

Of course it is, because most Canadians don't know the words anyway and it might embarrass little Billy or Susie.

Singing anything should be widely discouraged because, quite frankly, the singing voices of the vast, vast majority of us fucking suck. 8)

Save it for when you find yourself in the modern equivalent of Rick's Caf Amricain. That was a good reason to sing.
