It turned out to be a hoax. Mr. Harper hadnt had troubled swallowing a piece of hash brown after all. He later confirmed that the Conservative website, on which the fake news release was posted, had been hacked or as he preferred to say unauthorized a
I love these kind of hacks. They show two things; your security-fu is weak, and you depend too much on what other people tell you. And, no one is hurt in the process.

I don't know that. Perhaps a kitten was taunted with a bit of string for an extended period?

I don't think that's funny or innocuous at all.
Done by the same sort of people who think a movie about killing George Bush is fine art but anything remotely deragatory towards "their" leader is met with fits of outrage.
It's not about respect for Harper, 'cause I don't have a lot. It's not about respect for the title, 'cause I don't have that much more. But I guess I respect the government, of which he is a part (as is Layton or any MP) and bullshit like this should not be put out.
Then the password to your website should not be '123456'.

Bit of a leap of logic there. There could be no password and I wouldn't agree with the action. I could just barely see it if they'd posted that he's going to abolish medicare or something, but saying that he's dead or in serious ill health is just not on.

It's not a leap. It goes back to the childish behaviour of ringing someone's doorbell and running away. There will always be vandals in society.
Whether websites should be vandalized or not is a whole different discussion, but as you say 'bullshit like this should not be put out'. Well, if you don't lock your doors, and someone opens your front door, reaches in and locks it for you; don't be surprised by a note on the front door saying: "Thanks for all your stuff!" as a reminder to lock it yourself next time.
Lock the door, and there is no problem. Especially if your 'mansion' is well known, and you are wildly unpopular with a large percentage of the population.
This 'story' was easily correctable with a delete key and a few tweets. No harm done. And, no, I have no respect at all for parties and especially for many of those in government. They have been working especially hard the last couple decades to lose my respect, so they should not be surprised at that.

Ahem. This website was hacked some years ago by a Turkish group and I doubt like hell that Trevor was using a simple password as he's an astute fellow.
Bottom line here is that it is not the fault of the site owner if someone breaks in anymore than it's your fault if a criminal breaks into your house.

Although I mostly agree, I also think that if you live in a high risk neighborhood, throw up a bit more than a deadbolt.
