Haiti cannot be helped. It's akin to saying we can make a democracy out of Afghanistan.

Haiti was a shithole before the quake and will continue to be so. The Gaza strip has better prospects.

I think it's more akin to making a democracy out of Mercury. :D

As an independent country, Haiti has failed. Haiti is pretty much worse than any African country out there; it's sitting right next to Congo and South Sudan as an anarchic jungle.

The only way to move Haiti forward is to bring it under direct Western (American/Canadian) control like Puerto Rico in the past. I think the Haitian people will gladly accept foreign control in the short and perhaps long term.

Yeah, that might be true, but what country would be willing to take that task on? The cost in lives for any nation trying to to bring balance and control to Haiti would be very high I think and I don't believe a large portion of the Haitian people would welcome it.

It should be based on a fair vote referendum in my opinion. Like the old Republic of Texas did before it agreed to join the United States.

Think about that for a second, a fair vote in Haiti.........A calm, democratic, orderly vote in Haiti? Me thinks you just made a funny....

The only solution is to adopt Haiti as our 11th province or territory. This could then prompt a huge migration of senior Snow Birds from Florida and would make Haiti eligible for, among other things a Tim Horton's and at least one or two Economic Action Plan signs.

    Lol...I know.

A vote would be naturally conducted by the UN directly and skip the local administrations altogether (they are incompetent anyhow, even if it was fair). That would be the only way to conduct a real election.

Yeah right. The first thing Haitians did when the cholera epidemic started was to blame foreign troops. Haitians aren't ready to do what's necessary to make their country a better place. They're too caught up with trying to seize power from each other. A foreign power trying to run things? That's just asking for trouble, big time.

    Disengage.

We have given Afghanistan a go, that's never going to change either. We don't need any more guys being brought home along the 401 for nations that don't care about our guys or their own.

Let the French or the other Euro-weenies sort it out.
