"...There are many second- and third-generation Canadians, visible minorities, whose families will remain visible minorities until their gene pool changes."

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

The whole exchange between her kid and some other kids is blown way out of proportion. Saying you're Canadian is like saying you're cool. If you have to back up being cool with mountains of examples of how you're cool, you are not cool.

Now I am not saying she is not Canadian, far from it, she was born here. However I dont think she fully sees herself as Canadian as white folk.

People are always interested in finding out where others are from, who look different. My kids freak out the Chinese when we visit Vancouver, or Chinese restaurants in Winnipeg. They are fluent Mandarin speakers, while many Chinese kids in Canada don't know any at all. Here, we're always getting asked where we are from here, and we get plenty of questions about our food, do we like Chinese food, weather in Canada and plenty of questions comparing and contrasting Chinese and Western culture(I try to be as polite as possible).

Being Canadian is as much about being a shitmix of different origins as it is about being of one origin.

Like it or not, we all either came here, or our ancestors came here, from somewhere else. To escape, ignore, or erase our heritage is impossible, and to attempt to do so is foolish.

Granted, those of a distinct origin will always be labled based on the stereotypical geographic location their race is known to originate from. In other words, Canadians who's ancestors originated from China will always be Chinese-Canadians, Africans African-Canadians, etc. Alot of English speaking Canadians are known as Anglo-Canadians and French speaking Canadians as French or Franco-Canadians. This used to happen predominantly in the eastern part of the country around Quebec, again due to historical origins of relative populations, the languages of those areas that stuck, etc. It's not considered racist, it's normal.

You will start to see the same thing happening in places like Toronto and Vancouver, where the city populations are now over 50% a visible minority. In reality means that White/English-Canadians are also a visible minority, and I have personally been referred to as such by the local Indo-Asiatic populations in Surrey and Vancouver. My heritage is an identifier; and while it can be use for slander, so can every other personal trait you have that can be used as an identifier: Fat/thin, short/tall, blonde/brunette, green eyes/blue eyes, glasses/no glasses, white collar/blue collar, etc.

Point is, grow a spine and get over it. Call a spade a spade, and a shovel a shovel. If you're black you're black, white you're white. You will be slandered because of your race, regardless of what your ancestry is. Get over it, and enjoy the benifits of being a Canadian. For 99.9% of us, the benifits of being Canadian far outweigh the occasional hurtful comment.

For shits and giggles, whats your ancestry anyways? I'm preodminantly white with a shitmix of several european ancestors, including those from England, Scottland, Ireland, France, Germany, Ukraine, Russia, and Native American. It's quite the ugly mess considering most these country's/races went to war with eachother at somepoint in the last 500 years soley because of race.

Sorry, you're not allowed to claim North American unless you're First Nations - as you know, the rest of us are all immigrants.

Me, I'm from the Olduvai Gorge, Africa.

I saw the same in reverse many times.

I worked in a close team for 3 years and 2 of our guys were black. It just wasnt an issue to us but in the US , black Brits were unheard of at the time.

At first the guys found it amusing but it did start to wear thin being treated like freaks because of their very English accents.

One of the detachments was in Fla for 4 months and by the time we finished we were all glad to get the hell out.

It was an eye opener for all of us as they were our brothers, not black guys. We all signed the dotted line as equals. An IED doesnt see skin colour, it just explodes.

Well as Bart has been preaching, we all have to learn to do with less. At least I got the pick of available caves, and one day caveman well denote a person of status as the rest of you cavelessmen freeze outside and are hunted for sport by the ruling elite.

Hey, I thought we were buddies...please!

Actually, I could be very very useful in a cave. I read one time where snoring was an adaption for scaring predatory cats away from caves at night. My wife will tell you that I am a world class snorer!
