A new poll shows that 30 years after the first Quebec sovereignty referendum, and 15 years after the second, most Quebecers consider the debate over whether the province should separate from Canada no longer relevant. The survey conducted last month fo

For all those who think we are all separatists, read that carefully.

    A part of the poll:
Asked if they were federalist or sovereignist, 22 per cent said federalist and 24 per cent sovereignist. However, 22 per cent said they were partly both and 25 per cent declared themselves to be neither.

    Only 24% sovereignist.

This clearly shows that sovereignists represent the vast ''minority'' in the province.

Most are indifferent concerning the sovereignty issue.

Well it does - 71% are either for it or too stunned to care. 7% are missing all together.

I guess I just don't get the Quebecker fascination with maintaining French as their primary language. But at the same time, if that's what they want, then fine. But they should accept responsibility for that decision and not insist that everyone else be bilingual while they scrupulously stomp out public expressions of English in Quebeck.

They don't. Bilingualism is a federalist position. The Quebec separatists have written off their brethren in other provinces. They are actually logically consistent in that. But what I would like ROC to make clear to Quebec is that they won't be able to use Canadian passports or the Canadian $, but that they will sure as fuck take on their share of the national debt and pay for all federal property in Quebec. Actually Quebec separating would be great. We would then have the perfect excuse for cutting loose the Maritimes (They could become an American amusement park). Without Quebec's and the Atlantic provinces' poor GDP, we would really move up in the world.

Entirely possible. Newfoundland had come close to US statehood immediately after WW2 and would still be welcomed into the USA given the very cordial relations the US has long had with N&L.

Most people don't care. That's what the poll says. We want to have a "left-right" debate instead of a "federalist-sovereignist" debate. That's very good news.

Separatism is an archaic worldview - one cemented in the past 40 years. It's had its time, never grounded in any objective reality, but it's an abject failure. I'm glad Quebeckers are becoming more realistic...

Why? the states does a good job as an amusement park all by its self..

Andyt.. part of your response is correct. Qubecers don't give a rats ass what you speak outside the province, but they do within. Also Qubecers have not written off their brethern in Canada. The main issue is the power and control of the feds over the province. This is true of several other provinces who feel the feds have too much power and control. One has to realize the number of french speaking people in Qubec to understand the reason for bill 101 to prevent the assimilation into the north american sea of angliphones. Left unchecked french Qubecers would be assimilated and would be in danger of losing the culture as well as the language. This was the case prior to WWII.. from the 50s on we slowly took control of our own province and became as they say " Matre chez nous"

I discovered this when I was working at Intel. I had occasion to visit Montreal on business and was informed in no uncertain terms that Intel had to do business in French and that we also had to agree to a number of outrageous concessions if we wanted to business in Quebeck.

Intel was not selling anything, mind you, we were the .

Consequently I made the recommendation to cancel any further discussions with the Montreal firm and to go ahead and do business with Siemens on that project. That cost the Montreal firm around US$2.5 billion that ended up going to Siemens. Intel also made the choice to site a fabrication plant in Portland, Oregon instead of Montreal based in part on that transaction. That cost Quebeck around 1,500 high tech jobs.

So, sure, go ahead and protect your cultuue and isolate yourselves from the rest of North America. You can force us to speak French when we vist Quebeck, but you can't force us to do business there, visit there, or anything else. So do what you will, but recognize the fact that others will do as they will, too.

I realize most Quebecers want nothing to do with separation from Canada, I honestly do. If was a francophone Quebecer I would feel the same way.

But what I find a little "fucked up" is that 48 out of the 75 seats in Quebec are Bloc seats that's 64%.

With that it really suprises me when I have conversations with some Quebecers who are against separation but vote for the Bloc because in their view they best represent "Quebec's best interests" but get offended with me when I call the Bloc separatists instead of sovereigntists or whatever the fickle reasons are. Last time I checked Mr.Duceppe still wants Quebec to leave Canada so whats the difference ? Just the spelling of the meaning. In the end the Bloc still wants out. Why get pissed at me.

Either get the Bloc to change their message or at the very least send the NDP to Ottawa en masse instead of the Bloc if people find the Liberals or Conservatives that bad for Quebec.

Better idea start another Federal Party, that doesn't involve separation.

I don't have much respect for a party who's only interest is a certain geographic cultural region of the country carried along with the fuck the rest sort of attitude because they want out anyways.

Then and only then will the rest of Canada be less hostile.
