Crime drama "Law & Order" will end its 20-year run later this month, as the NBC network aims for a fresh start after years of creative missteps.

I'm actually surprised nobody posted this before...(or they did, but the fact that the title of the show, and the whole "Law & Order" news category really screws up the search to find older threads of this.

Anyway, I'm kinda disappointed to see the show go, but the quality, in my opinion, at least, really went downhill after Detective Briscoe/Jerry Orbach, although more at the fault of poor writing than the actors. It's disappointing, really, since Law and Order is one of my favorite series, especially when you watch the older episodes (my God they were so politically incorrect. I enjoyed the episode "Troubles" which said things no doubt would get NBC sued, like Chris Noth (forgot his detective name) comparing written Arabic lettering to a dancing chicken.

Though, I'd like to add. NBC, as usual, screwed over Law and Order much like they've been screwing over every other show they've put on in the past few years (another example: Southland). PICK A DAMN TIME SLOT AND STICK WITH IT YOU ASSHOLES. Anyway, just wondering if anybody else has any thoughts?

I totally agree. I love the older episodes and and didn't care so much for the last few seasons. To me, apart from the poor character development, I found the writers were relying too much on real world crime stories and not enough on fictional ones like they used to.

And of course, everything changed after Jerry Orbach left. He's still my favourite TV cop of all time.

I think I watched 5 minutes of it once.

I'd partially agree. I think they became lazy not by basing plots on real crimes, but rather how they made said plot distinct from said real crime. A crime wasn't just a crime, it was a grand cover up by the military or some corporation. The older episodes, to me, anyway, just had a more human touch to the murders. Season 4 is my favorite, so far. Sanctuary, Pride and Joy, Volunteers, etc etc all were done by people in the heat of passion, not because of some grand cover up or scheme.

I agree. I enjoyed Trial by Jury too, when he was on, but it's too bad he had cancer. That being said, I enjoyed some of the others after Orbach too. Fontana was hilarious, in my opinion.

Yeah, NBC enjoys self destructing over, and over, and over.

They cancelled "Heroes" with the same pen.
