at first I thought this guy just saw an episode and ran outside to be dumb..but I guess he did it often.. this time he wasn't so lucky.. it wasn't smart by any means, but its not some 17 year old with a camera and no brains.
How many people die each day testing their Urban survival skills, and aren't doing at all what they loved. But yes, he should have made sure he had a way to keep dry. Going 4 days w/o food isn't too bad, even in the cold as long as he has enough insulation on him. A plastic tarp and some way for starting a fire would have probably saved him.
Or a phone or radio, the way Survivorman always has on him. The one time he got in trouble was in Labrador when it started to thaw. It was impossible to move around in the deep, melting snow. Even his rescue team couldn't get to him and had to themselves be rescued by helicopter.
I did see a Charles Kuralt interview with a guy who went into the Michigan woods naked, with just a knife. He came out 3 years later, 20 lbs heavier, fully clothed and in great shape. While they were talking, the guy said "Oh, here's lunch" and reached into a bush to grab snake. (You don't think that could have been staged, do you?)
A Toronto man found dead in the Muskoka wilderness was testing survival skills he may have learned from watching a reality show and reading books.
Learned from watching a reality show....Survivorman .... He should have thought about getting some real experience by actually taking an outdoor survival course. This guy is a definite contender for the Darwin Award.

I'm not sure that this guy reminds me of Survivorman, the show that comes to mind while reading this story is JACKASS.

His basic equipment didn't include a good knife? Not a good start.

This is a difference reading about survival skills and learning survivor skill, he never got to that part.

Amen.
