EDMONTON - There's one way to deal with some of the coldest winter temperatures yet on the Prairies - outright denial.

Go to the Sierra desert dressed in nothing but a pair of boxers and flip-flops. You'll probably last all day and into the next.

Go outside here and now in nothing but a pair of boxers and flip flops. I'll give you 10 minutes to live. Might as well be on Venus.

I've ice fished at minus 42 (-58 windchill) you spend the whole day chipping ice and warming up inside your vehicle.

Excuse the correction. The Sierra Mountains are just a few klicks from here and while they are warmer than Edmonton, the two and three meters of snow that fell over the weekend would make things uncomfortable for anyone in boxers and flip-flops.

At one point on Saturday night, Edmonton had the dubious distinction of being the coldest place on Earth. The record low temperature of -46 degrees was measured at the Edmonton International Airport. With the Wind Chill, it felt colder than -50. The city itself was a balmy -35 degrees before factoring the Wind Chill.

Edmonton's frigid temperature was exceeded by a station in Siberia where the lowest temperature measured on Saturday night was -48 degrees. Edmonton's -46 degrees was 2 degrees off the coldest temperature ever recorded for the Airport. Set back on January 26, 1972, the coldest temperature recorded is -48.3 degrees. Saturday also saw the coldest low ever recorded at the Airport in December. Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights also saw record low temperatures for Edmonton Airport.

    Not in Edmonton,

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm wrong, see gigs post. Lol.

I've experienced windchills in excess of -70. You don't have to like it, but it is livable if you plan for it. (And I recall that day Gigs talks of. ;) )

It's always a trade off. I would prefer the cold, and the dry skin and the 25% humidity - because I don't have the threat of Jungle rot, or poison snakes, or creepy crawlies in my boots or climbing the walls every morning.

Days like we had this summer, record temps of +37, those are the ones I hate. I spent that whole weekend in the sun, wearing heavy coveralls.

Edmonton didn't get above 33.5 in 2009 (34 at the Leduc airport) absolutely gorgeous!
