The B.C. government will officially rename the Queen Charlotte Islands as Haida Gwaii under the terms of a "reconciliation" agreement signed with the Haida Nation.

I can't see what the problem is with this......as far as I'm concerned they can call it whatever they want to call it.

The Queen Charlotte Islands, in Northern British Columbia, Canada, is an archipelago of more than 150 islands. Long Known as Haida Gwaii, or Gwaii Haanas, the islands have gained a reputation for outstanding natural beauty and a remarkable First Nations culture.

For thousands of years the Queen Charlotte Islands have been inhabited by the Haida, an indigenous people to whom art, culture, legends, mythology, and community played an important role in their lives

Brilliant move. They can't drill, mine or log if they can't find it on a map. :D
Seriously, if it advances native treaties and gets them working with us, instead of against us, they can call it whatever they like.

This new economic deal might not make a dent. In ten years time they might still cry how poor they are and blame it on the white man.

Oh and I'll still call it the Queen Charlotte Islands. If my taxes are "paying rent" as some Aboriginals have pointed out to me, then I am going to call it whatever the hell I want. :)

It will be most interesting to see how long the moratoreum on exploration and drilling is honored under the new management! Any bets/ Any takers???

All it does is have "us" (Canadians) being forced to pay "them"(Indians) money when we want to develop our(Canadian)land. While they sit back and bitch that they aren't getting a big enough cut of our work. Meaning that instead of money going to Canadians is goes to very select group of people based on their race.

The Haida were calling the Queen Charloettes Haidi Gwaii for a long time before any white boy found them. BFD.

And how doe's this differ from the white mans system in most countries , Take what ever minority they deal with and it exists. I always find it strange how some feel so threatened bu them Indians, heaven forbid they do any thing with out approval by the nation .

Why also is it that the British Explorers always figured they were out to change the world and rename it in their country's honour .
