The Nato commander in Afghanistan has said that a surge of US troops will reverse the momentum of Taliban fighters within a year, leading to their ultimate defeat.

I sincerly hope that this isn't a case of wishful thinking.

He's right, as long as the general and the people can win the fight against his president.
If they can surge and beat the taliban into hiding in the remaining 2 years, that will give the Afghan forces breating room. That's long enough to build infrastructure, relationships and the trust of the people.

I've just started reading "Contact Charlie; The Canadian army, the taliban and the battle that saved Afghanistan." and they mention Mullah Dadullah's plan to sweep into Kanduhar, occupy some government buildings, raise the taliban flag and hype the shit out of it for the western media. He had no plan to hold those buildings and just wanted to make as huge stink so the media couldn't ignore it. He identified that the weakness of the Canadians and NATO members was their politicians, not the troops themselves. This is a perfect example of the 4th gen. warfare. I read but really didn't believe William Lind's book but this is a perfect working example.
