Yep and the Liberals had 13 years to do something about it. Instead, Chretien goes running around "rescuing" known terrorists.

A real headline would read "24 hours pass without another goddam Tory crime announcement"

..but.. but.. what about all those serial or multiple murderers who were falsely convicted? Oh.. Are there any?

Since judges and parole officials are never to be trusted, I see this as a very good move, expecially considering homicides are on the rise.

It's a great though, I won't hold my breath though, until it actually becomes law.

The new legislation would allow - but not require - judges to impose consecutive terms of parole ineligibility, meaning a killer might have to serve 50, even 75 years without chance of parole.
So, what's the point? Why not make it a requirement rather than an allowance?
"Sometimes when we introduce legislation, we have to be very careful about charter challenges and to make sure it complies and again, when we had a look at the whole issue, we believed this was a reasonable response to this question and again, it will be up to the judges."
Well, if it's still up to the judges then squat will change.

Seems I've heard this "get-tough-on-criminals" song before. It's always great to hear the powers that be blab on about getting tough on crime yet we continue to see criminals get away with pathetic sentences from the judges. Before wasting time on new legislation that may or may not be considered by the judges perhaps we should be changing the judicial system first.

if it saves just one life then I think it is worth it. lock them up and feed them with a sling shot.

Since manditory sentances raise the hackles of the judges, senators and opposition MPs, we'll have to make it optional then replace soft judges, one appointment at a time.

I'd rather see both soft and hard judges exist within an apropriate system, instead of ignoring the system and compensating by getting rid of the soft judges.

Justice is based on accountability so laws and sentances need to be determined by the public and their elected representitives, not by unaccountable, appointed judges.

I still say that criminals are a source of cheap labour. Force them to make shirts, or pants to pay for their stay in jail. Any profit goes to crime prevention programs and victim assistant programs.

Nothing will change because, frankly, Canadian society has become too soft to protect itself from predators.

Sure things will change, maybe not for the better but it will change. Then when Canadians wake up and realize what is happening they will also realize they are a few decades to late. So when in a few decades I am planning a HUGE party to invite everyone who thought the Liberal/left approach was the best way to run a country, then I can laugh and rub it in their faces.
