Classic BC Immigration story. Good work by the RCMP.

I'm also very confused when they say they don't know the country where the ship was registered. Isn't the country of registry written under the name of the ship?

Thank God they cought this before the people aboard were placed into slave labor or sex shops here in Canada.

Earlier Saturday night, Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan said from Ottawa early indications are the people aboard are from Sri Lanka, although that has not been confirmed. A vicious civil war on the island nation ended earlier this year with the defeat of Tamil separatists.

It sounds like they were mostly Tamil ex-tigers who fled before they were caught. Definately not someone Canada needs or wants.

That's a typical flawed leap in logic.

I'm sorry.. Are you saying that valuable immigrants usually sneak into the country through jerkwater BC ports? Perhaps they wanted to avoid the huge fan fair or paveratzi when they flew first class into YVR?

Canada needs to amend the Immigration and Refugee Act. It should not extend to people entering Canada illegally. Some people may find that harsh but it is the truth, we need to stop wasting millions of dollars a year on people who come to Canada illegally. If someone enters Canada illegally they should be deported the moment they are caught, don't care what happens to them when they are sent back they are not Canada's problem.

Go to the USA if you want to be an illegal alien they have 19 million. Canada has enough trash without taking on other countries.

Chances are these are Tamil who are coming to Canada with no intention of being part of Canada. Remember after the LTTE lost the leader of the Tamil community in Canada said something along the lines that the Tamils will have their own country even if it isn't in Sir Lanka. Not the kind of people Canada needs or should want

Alas! we agree.... my question is why seize it .. why not escort it back out of Canadian waters and send them packing... but no... they will be given refuge and probably housing..

Always nice to hear from my fans. :D

Meanwhile, the Toronto Tamil society issued this statement:

Canadas Tamil community is responding today to the arrival of 76 migrants aboard a ship, in Victoria Saturday by urging the government to award the passengers due process and consider humanitarian concerns.

Obviously that ham fisted segway was far more accurate than your flippant criticism. :D

The moment they set foot on Canadian soil, they can claim refugee status, right?

I guess we can welcome 76 newcomers...

Yep, what we should be doing is chartering an aircraft to take them back home. But hey, if we did that we would have Tamils running all over the Gardiner Expressway before you can say 'Olivia Chow'.

What we will do is let them in, give them welfare and wait for the next load of ships from Sri Lanka.
