this is bullshit. im a parttime seasonal employee with the city. i dont get any union benefits but i am forced off the job as well. if the city would hire more students this problem wouldnt exist.

So the city doesn't realize how much work these people are doing, and now it's the worker's fault that there is a mess?

Geez, I'm typically a very conservative guy but the armed chair Azzholes bureaucrats in Toronto need a kick in the butt. This is their doing, not the workers.

Those workers should come to Alberta. In Alberta, we don't screw people for coming to work instead of pretending to be sick.

The city of Toronto is broke. They can't afford to pay hundreds of thousands of hours in unused sick time. The water works are crumbling, bridges and roads are in the worst state in modern times, city services have been repeatedly scaled back.

Why should the uncivil servants be immune to the economic realities of a Toronto in decline?

And yet the city council still found enough for their raises.
The strike is greed and arrogance. The union wants everything and to give nothing in return.
The city is run by fools that only care about power and their pet projects.

I am from Alberta, I have no patience for greed and arrogance. But I do have a certain amount of reverence for workers that consistently show up to work.

The city wants to screw over the workers that actually show up to work, meanwhile they don't have a problem with the asshats that call in sick because they have a sore toe nail or a cough. Showing up to work is a basic requirement for most jobs, the city of Toronto doesn't seem to think so. That makes them just as useless and incompetent as the union workers that call in sick.

Why not give this all out to independant contractors?

    Seriously, why not?

That's kind of the funny part, many businesses are currently paying two to three times what it costs the city for private pick up as a intern solution.

How is not paying sick days to people who were well a right?

Do you get anything for using health care less than a cancer patient, or a person who eats junk food 24/7 and has a paralyzing stroke? No.

You are not entitled to sick days. Contractor workers, non union and small business owners don't have them. If we don't work, we make squat, as it should be.

They should better police sick day abuse. In a small geographical area like Toronto, it would quite easy to set up random home visits by nurse practioners to weed out or discourage the cheaters.

There beef that they want to be able to accumulate sick leave right up and until retirement then cash it in and retire, is bs. Even federal employees cant do that.
Its for when your sick, not a cash voucher upon retirement.

That's their main reason for striking.

When an NDP mayor and council stand up to a public service union, you know two things...

    it is bad, financially
the union train has gone off the reality rails.

That douchebag councillor, Adam Vaughn, spent $100K to re-decorate his office. How much kickback money did Dash & Tie Domi and Tom Jacobek piss away from the city coffers? Toronto City counsil is a throwback to the Boss Tweed, New York City Tammany Hall of the mid 19th century, and it's a problem that goes back before Miller. This isn't an issue of out of control unions. It's out of control politicians. Until counsil gets its corrupt house back in order, the City of Toronto is fucked.

True, but if it was a city wide contract the price would probably be lower than what it costs the city now.
Where I live, independant companies have the contracts for garbage and recycling bin pick up, snow removal and city landscaping, among other things that the city workers used to do.

1.)Tie had nothing to do with Dash and Wanda Liczyk's crap.

2.)Tom Jacobek was an egomaniacal asshat, who was brilliant. But he spent too many years at his father in laws knee.

3.)Howard Moscoe is still around. How can you trim the fat with that ass lodged in his council chair.

I miss David Crombie. How is that for old school. Last decent man in Toronto politics.

Who knew Adam could be a bigger dick than his old man was?

As an aside, Kyle Rae went went from being a gay issue obsessed troll to one of the best fixers for business development and getting through bureaucratic gridlock.

(See, I can say something nice)
