The dream of another NHL team in Toronto was unveiled today, though even the pitchmen for the project admit it is a long way from coming true.

Why, for the love of God, can't we just let Hamilton have a team already? Why does it have to be Toronto?

Just when you think a Toronto-based team couldn't choose a shittier name than "Raptors" something like this comes along. I'm already dreading what their logo will be. Probably some ridiculous ad-agency approved pop-culture abortion that'll go perfectly with their name.

At least it's not the Mighty Ducks.

this whole idea is a joke , as the NHL is not going to let another team go to toronto as the maple leafs have territorial rights and don't want anyone else that close , and a toronto expansion team would not be a draw in any of the other nhl markets .

plus they want to build a 30,000 seat stadium and need millions if not billions in financing to do all these ideas , this stadium concept be massive by nhl standards and for an expansion team it be impossible to fill that many seats , the whole idea is just stuiped .

so yeah the whole idea is just plain stuiped , i don't really see it going anywhere .

The NHL has already said they don't want a second Toronto team. That said, it's not the Maple Leafs that would suffer from a team in Downsview...it's Buffalo and Detroit. Each of those two teams gather attendence-paying fans from southwestern Ontario. Why would I drive from Hamilton to Buffalo when I could drive just as far to Toronto?

That logic puts a could damper on the Hamilton Coyotes. I'm not going to drive to Toronto to see the Leafs or drive to Detroit from London when I can take the 403 to Hamilton.

You're underestimating the appetite for hockey in southwestern Ontario. While what to do with the old Downsview grounds is rich for speculation, a second NHL team for Toronto isn't out of the question. Downsview is situated in a much better place for the rest of the GTA. It's off the 401, rather than all the way downtown. Again, if I live in Vaughan, Downsview is a much more attractive option than downtown.

The Leafs get away with $300 tickets because they're the only game in town catering to that market. Demand's got to be pretty high to offset that high price-point.

so yeah the whole idea is just plain stuiped , i don't really see it going anywhere .

The NHL may not let it happen, but a second Toronto team isn't a stupid idea. Calling them the Legacy IS stupid, because that team is going to be the Toronto Legs in 20 seconds at which point the players may as well do their on-ice warm-up to the ZZ Top song.

Whether the Leafs have territorial rights is a matter that the courts are likely going to rule on. They SAY they have such rights, but the Canadian Competition Act likely says they don't.

Yeah, the idea is "stuiped". Oh...the irony.

Financially, another team could easily exist in Toronto, the GTA or Southwestern Ontario. Whether Maple Leaf Sports allows it, is another issue entirely and this has SQUAT to do with market viability in other NHL cities.

Why would someone in London want to watch an expansion team get trashed by Atlanta or Nashville when they can drive to Detroit and see one of the best hockey teams in the NHL - a winner of 4 and possibly 5 Cups in the last 12 or 13 years?

Because people in London are CANADIANS and would cheer for a CANADIAN team, especially if it was from HAMILTON, which is a CANADIAN city. Real hockey fans aren't bandwagon jumpers and we sure as crap don't route for some faceless Missouri team that has NEVER won a cup. I'll support any team (and a Coyotes team or another relocation team will hardly get trounced by Atlanta Edit for baiting - H that plays out of Hamilton. And millions more will too.

I agree with Mustang. Driving downtown is a pain, even if I take the subway I've still got to trek over to Yonge or Sheppard so I can even GET to Yonge. Hamilton on the other hand is closer to places like London and Kitchener/Waterloo. The tri-city area plus all the small towns from London to Hamilton...not to mention Niagara Falls, St. Catherine's plus the western towns in the GTA, would all be able to get to a renovated Copps Coliseum much easier than downtown.

That's millions of people aching to see the NHL without having to go to Detroit, Buffalo or downtown Toronto. Even at Downsview, it's slightly more palatable...but not much. I don't want to contend with tackling the 401 during rush hour to get to a 7:00 weeknight game.

Simply put, the Toronto Maple Leafs Empire could stand some serious financial contention. I'd go to Hamilton Coyotes games...even if they do suck. I hear you get a free BlackBerry Pearl with purchase of a flex-pack.

Sorry BUT the Toronto Legacy bid is for an expansion team and not a relocation of an existing franchise... Any expansion team will be a doormat for it's first few seasons... 8O

I live about equal distance from Toronto, Buffalo and Detroit, give or take a few minutes. I have driven to all three cities for hockey/baseball games and concerts. Driving into and out of Toronto, as Mustang said, is a colossal traffic pain-in-the-ass. Crossing the border to the USA gets to be a more time consuming task every year. You can pretty much count on a hour wait to cross at either Buffalo or Sarnia. I haven't crossed at Windsor in a long while, but it must be equally slow. So, if I want to go to an NHL game, it's Hamilton/K-W/London for me or nothing. It takes a maximum of 1 hour in the car, with zero traffic and waiting, for me go to K-W, Guelph, London, Barrie or Owen Sound to watch an OHL game, so that's what I do.

Why is it a joke? The larger US markets have multiple sports teams (LA, Chicago, New York) in the same sport. While I'd rather see expansion to other places in Canada, like Winnipeg or Hamilton, it's a better idea than another team in the US sunbelt.
