ROME and TORONTO Fiat SpA will abandon Chrysler LLC, leaving it to fend for itself in bankruptcy court, unless Chrysler's Canadian and American unions agree to substantial labour-cost reductions by the end of the month, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne says.

Who wants to bet that the union would rather see Chrysler shut down than take a pay cut?

I hope the union boys see that if they do that,
    Chrysler will Chapter ,

and Fiat can pick off what it wants, rather than buying
    the whole damn mess.

No one else is coming to help them....

I'm starting to enjoy this, if for nothing else than watching the hardcore union doofuses have to squirm. Anyone who thinks that North American business is cut-throat hasn't had the pleasure of dealing with the Europeans. They're so cold-blooded they make the Wall Street boys look like a bunch of pikers by comparison.

You bet. They've been out of line for many years and are directly responsible for part of the problem now.

You proposing any alternatives there Stemmer or are you just going to just sit there and fume?

Chrysler is screwed unless they merge with Fiat both in terms of the stabilizing effect, plus the bailout money that will come its way. Why wouldn't Fiat demand certain concessions from Chrysler if they are going to merge with them? Fiat doesn't need Chrysler, but Chrysler definitely needs them. Do you honestly expect Fiat to just take on Chrysler as it is just to drag them down with it? Doesn't make any sense business-wise. Chrysler has put themselves into this position, now they are forced to do whatever is necessary to get out of it.

I honestly hope that Fiat walks away from all of this and Chrysler goes tits up on the tundra! The only ones that can be blamed for it are the greedy unions and shitty management!

I have no doubt that's what they want. Unions, IMHO, are a creation of a bygone age and should disappear in the mists of time already. Labour standard have come a long way since the days when unions were first created to protect workers.

Nowadays, they are nothing more than parasites sucking the livelihood out of companies. I've seen far too many companies shutdown/go bankrupt because of union strikes, which puts everyone out of work.

But on the other hand, the working class, apparently, is still getting shafted...

Think back to that measly $53-a-year raise that the average Canadian worker has gotten since 1980. It amounts to considerably less than a 1 per cent hike in purchasing power over 25 years. In contrast, labour productivity over the same period has shot up 44 per cent. So while Canadians are producing nearly half as much again as our parents did, we are enjoying practically none of the gains. The fruits of our labour have, by and large, gone to bulk up corporate profits which have shot up 153 per cent, in real terms, since 1980.

I'm taking quotes out of that article all over the place, kick ass read. Anyway, it would appear the worker is still getting shafted overall. Even with all the cases of the worker's unions sinking the ship.
