PANJWAII DISTRICT, Afghanistan - Three years of fighting in the dust-choked lanes and tangled grape fields of Panjwaii district have taught Canadian soldiers some hard, bloody lessons.

.. before the inevitable "the Russians had tanks too." starts, we need to also point out that the Russians also had restrictive and inflexable command and only later did were they freed to respond to the enemy. Western commanders entrust their troops to respond to changing conditions and that makes all the difference.

A great reference on this is:
The Bear Went Over the Mountain : Soviet Combat Tactics in Afghanistan
This was a Frunze Military Academy series if vinettes that detail the way the soviets started, what went wrong, what they learned and how they started getting it right.

Also, stingers are more effective then IED's and can shoot the Soviet Hind's Helos which were key to soviet armored doctrine at the time.

The Russians also had badly designed tanks and APC's.

Bring some Abrams. The Taliban will need to make an IEDs big enough to blow one up. They should knock out maybe 4 of those before running out of stuff. Then they're fucked.....

Dude, you need anything for this war?

Oh man, could you bring some tanks with you? That'd be great.

Stingers won't be an issue this time. The ones supplied by the US years ago, only have a short battery life and they have no way to replace them. They were key to fighting the Soviets though.

Stingers won't be, but Pakistan has plenty of their own MANPADs and I'm sure that's where the Taliban keep getting theirs from.
