Feeling lucky? What if the big prize for the lottery ticket you just bought has already been won? And no one told you?

Be prepared for a price increase, then. If they can't sell off all the tickets, the WCLC will figure out how many tickets they'll likely have to pull, work out the lost revenue from that, spread it over the tickets they will be able to sell, and leave the prizes the same. My gut feeling is that probably abut half the tickets, in general, will be voided if there's one top prize, so expect a doubling in ticket price.

Or they'll make a lot of top prizes, to maximize sales, but have the jackpots lower, or up the prices to cover that.

But then again, math clearly isn't a strong point in those who play the lottery....

It only matters if you don;t understand the way tickets are sold.

You have no real chance of winning the top prize anyways.

Nope. I buy the occasional 649 or Super 7 ticket when the jackpot gets into the high 20s and up, but I figure the $2 is worth it for the few days' indulgence in fantasy if I win.

This article isn't talking about 6/49 or Super 7, it's talking about the scratch and win tickets. I understand them complaining about selling a Set for Life ticket after the SEt for Life prize is won. After all, that'd be like 6/49 selling tickets only capable of winning $10 or $100, and not the jackpot. Still, the tickets are fairly labelled, and if you are dumb enough to buy them, you should expect that sort of thing to happen. A friend used to work for WCLC and she told me they have only about a 2% chance of winning. That's huge compared to the big lotteries, but the prizes are a pittance as well.

As an aside, I have a brother who buys $10 of scratch tickets for everyone in our family for stocking stuffers at Christmas (I have a big family, so it's well almost 200 each year) and he's been doing it for almost a decade. For the most part, the tickets don't even earn back half of what he paid for them. You'd think that given that we've scratched about two thousand tickets, someone would have one something nice, but we've only managed $50 once...most 'winning' tickets are for $1 or $2. I would never buy them myself, but everyone in the family loves it, and we spend a chunk of the holiday scratching our tickets, expecting to win $10,000. Of course we never do, but I've got sisters who are convinced it's only a matter of time...

What's dumb about buying lottery tickets? Not everyone is addicted to gambling.

I have won a couple of minor prizes on 649... 2000 being the best and I have been buying every Wed/Sat for years. I still think the retailers who sell tickets can scam the system and I dont trust the do it yourself scanners either.. I had a ticket that showed no winner when I scanned it but when I checked the paper I had won on the encore $47 and change.. There is still room for a better system.

I was talking about scratch and win tickets, not Lotto 6/49. Given the poor odds of winning, they are a foolish way to spend money.

Frankly, I don't care, I never buy them and the money goes to a variety of charities, so feel free to buy as many as you like.

No different than pull tabs in a bar. If you arent friends with the bartender or waitress you will never know if the big one is won already. I like the 6/49 once in awhile so I can threaten to quit my job...tour the world and have a car and bike for every day of the month. nice little daydream
