We recently lost a species of rhino? FF sake, that's a big critter to lose!

Coming soon to that list, a bunch of shark species. If you havn't seen the film Shark Water, I recommend it.

Dammit, if something big goes extinct, I want to at least get to eat one first. I need more warning next time!

Okay...so if we're losing 1% of our biodiversity every year...how long will other animals even exist?

thats the million dollar question. we need to know how many actual species actually exist before we can say. 1% really could be quite conservative, since new species are discovered almost daily. check out they are trying to document every species on the planet.

That's why I find that sort of shock statistic completely unbelievable. It's one of those easy catch-phrases that everyone parrots but no one can qualify.

The eco system is a delicate thing, many animals depend on other animals for a food source or animals actions that contribute to there food source.

It's so nice of us to constantly disturb that delicate eco system and ruin it for the rest of the animals. I saw a documentry on the animal planet about a couple species of birds that only existed on this one island that were completly whiped out by the humans of that island for a complete stupid reason.

I also saw Shark Water and it is amazing how ignorant we are. Why don't we just kill off every species now and get it over with, because that is the direction we are apparently heading to.

Shark Fin soup has now grown popular in China, and because of that every third world country has been out in the waters hunting sharks for the fins. Cutting there throats and there fins. Sticking the sharks back into the water after they slit there throats and cut off there fins and sell them to China for a lot of money.

Which is pretty much the majority of the case of animal extinction, like we don't have enough food varieties already. We just can't leave some species alone unti'll there all dead and in our stomaches.

As for the new species, maybe evolution is still going or maybe nature is working hard to bring us new species to replace all the fuck ups and ignorance we do as humans so we don't completly fuck up the eco system.

    Sarcasm on.

Chinese society is thousands of years old, steeped in mystic eastern tradition and folklore.. like skinning raccoons alive and keeping bears in cages to extract their bile, not to mention all the herbal remedy ingredients. The Chinese could never be at fault or at odds with the environment. It has to be the west because we are so decedent, greedy and evil. Besides.. We have to blame the west because we're the only ones dumb enough to keep paying guilt money.

China is attacked and condemned all the time over those actions with all the various conservation groups telling them they will end up rendering those animals extinct if they don't stop it now.

I doubt you hear about it since you don't run in those obviously lefty hippie circles.

Left or right shouldn't matter. Dodo birds and black rhinos shouldn't be hunted to extinction.

Sharks and tuna will be next.

You're right. It shouldn't matter. Increasingly it seems to be designated a left only philosophy though.

It is when it always falls on our backs and wallets to fix it.

    I thought it was...

    Yeah, I giggled a bit.

Look 6.7 billion people in an ever advancing society that methodically extract more and more from the environment for our own use, and what do you expect? It's not our fault. We're like prairie dogs or yeast cells--we're going to exploit the natural environemnt to maximum potential Eventually we'll run out of such easy energy and food and we'll decrease in population. I think it's foolish to thik, as a species, we are even capable of thinking far enough in advance to do anything about it. We're not that advanced. Behaviourly, there's not alot of difference between us and a pack of baboons.

Biodiversity loss is a necessary by product of our advancement in numbers and societal sophistication.
