With all the new shipping technology what's the big deal. Something that was difficult to do 50 years ago should be easy now.

Oh damn I forgot the point of the story...more alarmist bullshit.

Actually, there isn't one word of alarm in the entire story.

The only alarm being spouted is from YOU!
    Bullshit, indeed!

The breaking up of what little ice there is in the passage, won't that lead to it melting fast. ?? Anyone?

I've been following this guy's blog who's sailing the Northwest passage this year with his girlfriend.

Voyage of the Bermilla. They're sailing into an ice warning right now.

But yeah there's nothing new about a navigable Northwest Passage. There have been over a 100 successful passages. Thirty by pleasure craft. In 2000 a guy sailed it without being stopped by ice once. A tour ship sailed it in the 80s. That was when we were worried about global cooling. A bunch of cops sailed it in a wooden schooner in a single season in 1944.

I think maybe people are freaked by the Northwest Passage, because they remember that story about Franklin getting stuck in the ice and resorting to cannibalism. But that was when the little ice age was still winding down. It was cold back then.

Like i said, the Canadian barge company NTCL has been doing it for years so cant understand why all of a sudden its big news unless someones pushing an agenda.

Ironically some of their barges got frozen in on hudsons bay and points north the last few years because of early ice.

Ntcl uses the claim of sailing it in their full page ads in many northern magazines.

The Bermilla is going west to east. Here's another guy going east to west this year.

    http://www.69nord.com/english/expe/logbook.html

He's having ice problems right now too. Has to sit and wait for a bit.

Check it out. He's really impressed by all the polar bears he's seeing.

Do you remember that yoyo last year who was going to try it in a kayak, but he got ice locked before he even hit the Bering straight. Last I heard he was calling for a Russian ice breaker to come get him. What ever happened to that guy?
