Ottawa collecting on student loans even after borrower dies

How can family members be held responsible for the debt of others? If I was being hassled by the collection agency like this I'd find out where their offices were and pay them a personal visit. You never know what an emotionally distraught individual is capable of........... or what they could get away with.

well that sucks dont it... the whole student loan system needs to be overhaulded and collection agencies shouldnt be involved.. I hear alot of young nurses who have graduated recently say they are harassed by both the government and collections agency... they say they come out of university so far in debt they dont think they will dig themselves out.. a new grad nurse doesnt make that much money and most have rent, food, loans for cars etc and the general cost of living.. I think (never had a student loan by the way) that after graduation and full time employment for 2 yrs .. half the loan should be forgiven... also I think if you get an education with a student loan you should have to agree to stay in Canada for 5 yrs... and half of loan forgiven after 2yrs of working

Why should half the loan be forgiven when more than half the cost of an education is already paid by the taxpayer.

Why should someone who didn't co sign a loan be hassled over someone else's debt.......after they've died?

Is this actually Ottawa's doing or the banks. When I had my student loan everything was through the bank.

Likely the bank's the Gov't gives away exponential amounts of money compared to student loans, to Third World shitholes, knowing they'll never see it again.

At least with the student loan defaulters, they're paying some of it back in the form of taxes.

Family members aren't part of the estate. Creditors should be sued for harrassment for going after the family members.

Seems some have lost the focus of the story. This isn't about you not paying off your debts, but you dying and then someone going after your family to pay off your debts.

Did you ever go to Uni? How much did it cost you? I could theoretically come out of University with over $50k in debt, how the fuck is that fair? Just so I can get an education, and with Anthropology, what's the chance I'm going to get a good paying job with just a BA? So I pay even more for my MBA, then do my doctoral studies, then I'm up to my fucking eyeballs in debt, so I have to work for 20 years before I can fully pay the fucking thing off.
Field work better be fucking amazing, maybe I should just... disappear on the job in some foreign country, leave a few bloodied up rags and a toe or something. lol

There's government and bank run student loans, depending on how much the government feels you need, one may find themselves getting a special student plan from a bank (I get e-mails about Scotiabank all the time) on top of their government loan, or if they're totally turned down by the government.

That's your choice and your problem. If you can't afford the education and aren't willing to pay off the debt, then maybe you should explore other avenues.

No longer can one get a job working on the line at one of the Big Three factories to pay off all if their debts or even get the cash before they start uni. Education inflation is rampant in this country, and if one isn't suited to one of the more scientific fields or skilled trades then they can have a hell of a time finding the money to pay for a basic degree. Oh, wait, they have their high school daploma! Hey, that'll get them a job at... ummm... how 'bout that McDonalds down the street?
I'm paying over $5k a year in tuition, then I need housing, food, I've payed almost $1000 in books for both semesters. I don't have a mathematical brain and I can't it a nail into a wall without bending it, education costs are way too high nowadays.
