Can't believe it has been 25 years......

Good story and they had the pilot of that bird on tv last night.He didnt sound like it was a big deal,just glide it in to Winnipeg and then reroute to Gimly where the runway was more familiar to the co-pilot.

Yup, and from what I remember, every time the Boeing test pilots tried to reproduce it on the simulator they created a smoking hole in the ground.


I grew up around aircraft and airports and I can easily remember the respect and in a few cases, awe, over this feat of flying from the pilots I knew.

I had to work there for 7 weeks last summer, not much too it anymore, most people don't seem to remember to much about it.

I recall discussing this with a USAF test pilot.....

His conclusion:

"Medicine and wits, man....let the force be with you."

Reminds me of the F-16 pilot who did a dead-stick landing when it was supposedly impossible to do that.

Anyone know if that flight is available on the web for MS flight sim?
I would like to give it a shot.So far all my experience for gliding heavy's on the sim has resulted in a crash and I've tried a few.

I bet Regina flew on that plane and didnt even know it.

I wonder if they told the passengers before each flight that they were on the Gimli glider.

I've never looked through my sim for that but I bet MS Flight sim has that airport on there. I haven't run it in quite some time but I've flown heavies to some pretty small places...........not a dead stick though........well it was dead after I cra.... I mean after I landed.

I got it all loaded right now on my desktop because it's got the widescreen but only the old version of MS flight sim. So closest I can come is the triple 7 at Montreal(Dorval). I'll have to factor in the fuel fuck up. Dont know if thats the right airport.

It has some pretty small airports in there.......but I bet it's been a few years since I've tried it. Come to think of it I bet Gimli wouldn't be on it since it's not an active airport anymore and hasn't been for decades.

Ready to taxi,I'll take it up to 44,000 feet and set a heading for Edmonton.Dont think I'll set up a fuel failure but just shut off the engines over the border. I know I'll probably crash.

My last ten trys at gliding wound up with a crash but only because I hit map view and cheated on my altittude and airspeed.I was in the stratos sphere doing mach freaking sit you back in your seat speed.

That was my first flight sim and it's on my old pentium one sitting off to the side.The one plane I miss off that sim is the b52 bomber.
The new sims are nice,do a flight up north and you can put the nothern lights up for scenery.

I used the auto-pilot to get me to the altitude and speed I want. Doesn't take much to get the "Over Speed" warning when you're flying a brick.
