I feel sorry for the little girl. But let me be the devil's advocate for a moment. Why was the Rotti chained? why was the little girl allowed to go near it if the mom was so concerned about this type of dog?
This type of attack can have long lasting effects on these kids but there are always queations that are never asked.

Any dog that bites a human has a power problem and needs to be put down. You can never allow that animal among people again.

I was bitten by our dog when I was 15. It was put down 3 days later.

I was bitten by a dog when I was 12, it was kicked in the teeth 3 seconds later. got a tetanus shot, cops went to the guys house and ordered the dogs chained up.

    worked for me

How about the dog that was cornered by a bunch of kids, had rocks thrown at him and when one kid decided it would be interesting to see what would happen if you light a match under the dog's paws, the dog had enough and bit the kid's hand? Should he also be put down?

The lady who runs a rescue close by tells me horror stories about the dogs they rescue. She also said that ANY dog (even my 2 golden retrievers) should be treated as a loaded gun - the potential of something bad happening is always there...

    Yes.

And the kids should be locked up.

Hellooo..... 'Rotti on a chain'. What part of this pic don't you understand Mom???

Since the yard isn't fenced, the dog is required to be on a chain. It was. In it's own yard.
The kids were trespassing. (as kids are won't to do).

'Mom' obviously did'nt do her job. Both in making the child understand the possible danger and also in not supervising her daughter.
My sympathies to the little girl but a 'kick in the ass' for her Mom!

If my dog ecer did that I would put it down myself. When did we start to value a dog's life over a child's?

Matter of fact, that's how my last dog met his end. Retriever cross, was about 14 years old and couldn't see real well. Took a couple of nips at my four year old cousin's face. barely broke the skin, but half and inch over and it would've been an eye.

Never had trouble with him before that, but as soon as a dog crosses that line, it's a 270 shell to the back of the head.

And what kind of a life would the dog have then?

If, (and it is speculation what snookums mentioned) that dog would be "teased" like that, and bite, it would never be able to get back to its normal behaviour. It would always have a problem trusting kids, and the only way a dog can show that, is by biting. I am sorry, but it is looking for trouble if you don't put it down.

A pet is NEVER worth more than a child.

What makes you say that I cant value my dogs life more than yours ? My dog is part of my family, and if someone else has done something that is against the law or is in a position that makes the dog bite, good. In your case, I understand that situation. I would`ve done the exact same, but in the article of a stupid mom that cant have the understanding and responsibilty of a parent should be more in doubt.

Didn't say you can't. You can do whatever you want. Of course, if you value your rotties life more than that little girl's, it is my opinion that you should be committed, and then your dog should be destroyed.
