Former Liberal cabinet minister John Manley won't be calling for a dramatic reduction of Canadian troops in volatile southern Afghanistan in his eagerly awaited report on the country's military future there.

This will fall on deaf ears with the Cut & Runners such as Jack Layton..

How is it in Canada's interest to remain in Afghanistan?

it will be interesting to hear what the panel has to say about the future of this mission .
but i hope the oppositon parties don't ignore it and say they would do someting else anyways .
example being dion's " we must advise nato about 2009 date rant "

I cant even begin to imagine what the repercussions of Canada pulling out of Afghanistan would be. Even if we were to remain there just for reconstruction it would be a disaster. Like it or not I think we're stuck there for a while. I think a better question than "should we pull out" is "what are we going to do to get the other Nato Allies to live up to their commitments and to start contributing more?"

I see nothing but positive repercussions coming from a 2009 pullout: If we do pull out, maybe NATO allies will be less inclined to take Canada for granted in the future.

And the country could quite possibly destabilize and become a haven for terrorists who now hate Canada.

    Fuck that shit.

The place is already a haven for terrorists, and a breeding ground for them, too.

Getting out of this festering mess wouldn't make life any more hazardous for Canadians. Quite the opposite, in fact, at least in the longer term.

Getting out of the mess and getting rid of it are two different things. When you throw shit into the fan, be prepared to get it right back in your face. We've already thrown the shit into the fan ever since we went in in 2001, so we might aswell deal with it.

Leaving would guarantee the place will be a breeding ground for terrorists, least if we stay there is a chance that things could change. I'd rather take a chance, and so would almost every member of the Canadian military. Almost 80 men have died taking the chance.

i think we need to decide to win this war.

that means kicking the media out, and letting the soldiers do what is neccessary to win.

"we" are never going to win this war.. its not our war its the US war.. they fucked up in Iraq, Vietnam, Korea,, and they are losing the so called war on terrorism.. the middle east is its own worst enemy and this is heightened by their religious beliefs... Canada should pullout and leave the country to re-establish itself.. any form of financial aid will not go to the people of Afhanistan.. just like Iraq... we are being hood winked by the bush administration and because of Harpers close ties.. we are involved.....

More advise from the "whatever it takes to get elected" party.. who put us in Afghanistan in the first place.
It's foreign policy. That's big kid stuff. Don't even try to figure it out because we saw the best you could do and that almost got us into a war with Pakistan.
