Canadian forces fight dwindling ranks in Afghanistan

With soldiers quitting the army in greater numbers since the Afghan combat mission began and critical shortages in some military trades, it has been a struggle for Canadian commanders to keep generating the forces required for the war against the Taliban.

Any chance it has something to do with the fact that all the young guns retired early in the 90's during buget cuts, and now it is time for the old geazers to retire?

Only minimally I think. All the "young guns" of that time period are already filling the leadership positions. It's the group behind that one that the focus is on. They would be the ones who have numerous tours as well, not really close to retirement, and looking at the attractive private sector.

I don't know what the progression rate is like in a field unit lately.

We made a special purpose group for Korea, comprised of ex-WW2 vets that focused on fighting, not the trappings of a garison mentality military. I don't think we need to return there, considering we're moving to a cadre role, but it definately could give us some teeth if we need them.
It would be better if some of our NATO pals stepped up to the plate though.
