The fines should be more than $1,150. Make it $10,000 and every person present at an illegal campfire gets this fine.

Vancouver Island COs conducted campfire ban patrols over the weekend. 3 groups managed to miss all the signs concerning campfire bans. One campfire was located only 19 steps from a campfire ban sign. COs issued 3 violations tickets for campfires for a total of $3,450 in fines

An additional $10,000 for pure stupidity.

FFS any moron can see how dry and vulnerable it is out there. Regardless of how good you think you are at containing a campfire it takes just one ember to escape that could cause devastation for a community. Stop being so careless, thoughtless and stupid. You don't have to like the rules but FFS obey this one for everyone's good.

And but, but it isn't a campfire, its a cooking fire was the most used excuse...

    No surprise there.

Right now, until we get significant rain there is no excuse for putting others at risk.

Friends of mine woke to pounding on their door at 1:50AM this morning and were told they had to evacuate immediately due to yet another wildfire burning in our area of the Cariboo. Don't know the cause of this one yet but considering the fact that we have not had any lightning strikes recently, this could very well be man-made. High time that jail sentences were handed out for man-made fires - that, and really stiff monetary penalties. Putting others lives and property at risk due to ignorance and/or carelessness is simply criminal. Yet no one has yet been charged for starting the Ashcroft Reserve fire last year.

Agree as well. Too many people act like theyre special and that the rules dont apply to them. And maybe they get lucky. Their campfire doesnt give off too many embers and everything is fine. But all it takes is one spark to set everything ablaze.

And that excuse will work if the person responsible is:

    1. A recent immigrant.

    2. A Native.

    3. Poor/homeless.

Perhaps. But it'll work in pretty much any Canadian court and you know it.

Well here we go again. We in the Hawkins Lake and Eagle Creek area have just been issued an Evacuation Alert due to the Lang Lake fire which is deemed out of control. We are to be prepared to leave with possibly limited notice.

I'm angry, Strutz. Here we are facing the possibility of having to leave our homes yet they have 1 - yeah firefighter and a couple of pieces of equipment on the fire. Parts of the area were upgraded to an evacuation order last night but so far we are still on alert here.
