So far only 6 reported. I hope it doesn't go any higher.

Supposedly everyone on the train is safe/okay and the fatalities are all on the road.

On the noon news they said the opposite. The article says the same, that no motorists were among the fatalities.

I assume that some of the injuries could be very serious which could, unfortunately, raise the fatality rate.

Yeah, the deaths were all on the train. But it is amazing that no one on the highway was killed. Still a horrible situation though.

The guy on KOMO must have a stutter. He said 66 dead while everyone else said 6 rail passengers were fatalities.

News story here says that something might have been on the tracks.

This is interesting because back in April of this year the leftist terror group Earth First took credit for dumping concrete on that same railway with the hopes of derailing a train.

The fuckers pulled down the article today but it still lives on in the Cache:

The train runs across the border into Vancouver so there may be some Canadians aboard. FYI.

Trump's thumping his chest at the need for infrastructure renewal in America ... this train accident being some sort of proof.

The train that crashed is a brand new train on new track on it's maiden run. The Hillbillies from Bugtussle who make up his power base are not capable of detecting the irony.

The train was running on track that didn't have Positive Train Control installed and the train then ran too fast at 81mph around a corner that was rated for 30mph.

Had PTC been in place then this would not have happened. Part of the Trump infrastructure proposal is to make PTC available on all mainline passenger railroads.

Amtrak got a 13% budget cut in Trump's transportation plan back in May of this year:

If it was going too fast around a slow-rated corner then that's either mechanical failure or the engineer was drunk/high. Again to both possibilities because Amtrak is unfortunately well-known for both operating bad equipment and for too many of their engineers having substance abuse issues.

This accident involved a brand-new Spanish made passenger train. Speed is so far being considered the problem as no one has accused or suspected the engineer of being on drugs.

Didn't the last time this happened the engineer ran home and shot himself? Or was that a ferry driver in NYC? Seem to recall one of them doing that because they were high as a kite on crack while operating.

In this case I'm inclined to think that it was a new line and the engineer mistakenly thought the speed limit for the whole line was ~80mph...plus he was probably under a lot of pressure to make good time.

Same thing happened with the Titanic.

Local Washington mayor feared deadly accidents weeks before Amtrak derailment

An Amtrak train carrying more than 70 passengers derailed in Washington state Monday morning during its inaugural ride on a new route, leaving multiple people dead and injured but a local mayor predicted the high-speed rail plan would end with a deadly accident.

Mayor Don Anderson and other city officials in Lakewood, southwest of Tacoma, attended a meeting on Dec. 4 on the new project to upgrade tracks, KOMO News reported. Anderson believed it was a matter of time the high-speed train would be involved in a deadly accident.

The Amtrak train derailed Monday morning after leaving the new Tacoma station. (Washington State Patrol Trooper Brooke Bova)

Its virtually inevitable that someone is going to get killed that wouldnt be killed otherwise," Anderson said. "This is unacceptable."

Come back when there is that accident, and try to justify not putting in those safety enhancements, or you can go back now and advocate for the money to do it, because this project was never needed and endangers our citizens, Anderson said.

Anderson also advocated for grade separations, including overpasses, to keep trains sufficiently separated from pedestrians and cars....
