He was not a student at that school. Kids were waiting there in the cafeteria for their bus to take them to a school 15 minutes away.
Also, according to his friends, he was a quiet kid, who hardly ever spoke about his home situation. Turns out he lived with his grandparents, his father had been in jail before for attacks on his significant other (the kids mom and his gf), and was an overall nice, but quiet kid. His friends did not expect this, no one did.

That story implies the kids was a student at the school...

And other stories on the same site make it pretty clear that he was a student at the school.

Like I said, they use the school cafeteria while they wait for their bus. Apparently, the bus stop is at that school. The other school is 15 minutes away.

Until they actually say that the kid shot some bullies we can't put this down yet as a bullying reprisal/ victim's revenge. Columbine proved this when it came out, after the media attention disappeared, that none of the kids who were killed did any bullying at all. Kleibold and Harris were just a couple of demented and murderous assholes. It certainly wasn't a case of victims of bullies taking revenge. This kid in Ohio could easily turn out to be the same.

In a perverse way the logic of such shooters makes sense:

If no one cares about the bullying then everyone is responsible for it.

Thus an apparently 'random' shooting isn't actually all that random after all.

The press conference that was given right after the indictment, and the statements of his friends, suggest the complete opposite.

I'm sure he snapped somehow, and I am more sure he was pretty traumatized by his home situation. Something his friends say too. But from what I heard, no one could have prevented this.

With these two the bullying just got them started on their trip into oblivion. I agree with you that in the end they were just murderous a-holes. Still, what got them started was that they were bullied by jocks and, naturally, that was ignored by faculty because jocks get to do all sorts of crap and dismiss it as 'good fun'.
