My US passport has a scan code on it and, reportedly, a subtle RFID tag, and when I checked in with the TSA at the airport last week they scanned the passport and my info came up on their screen.

I'm surprised its not biometric, most countries already have them and thinking it will become standard in a few years. Might aswell have gone for the whole nine yards now.
Currently I think these are just the minimum requirements of ICAO these passports address. Which have been in effect for sometime now and full biometrics could be comming in sooner. Biometric passports have been around since 2004.

meh. lets forget the passports and move straight into the electronic implants for ID, credit cards and stuff.
