We can spend it on social programs, or we can spend way more on cops, prisons, healthcare, insurance etc, etc. But somehow that never seems to bother people. Great idea, if we take out that whopping sum of $4 million that the registry costs us, this year deficit will only be $55.596 billion instead of $55.6 billion ($55.588 if you believe it costs us $12 million annually)!

Methinks the deficit has FAR, FAR more to do with the 5.6 billion spent on the HST and the $20 billion or so in tax cuts to corporations, than the measly little $4-12 million spent annually on the LGR. Give it up already...

The 'cost' lie is the one you and the Conservatives persist in bringing into the conversation every time the LGR comes up.

Wow, we spent a billion on it in 2003! Where was Harper in 2003? Demanding our troops fight in Iraq as part of the Official Opposition if my memory serves me correctly.

What year is it again? Oh yeah, 2010! The set-up costs were high (just like as the article notes, so were the set-up costs for the HST). However, annually, the LGR costs between $4-12 million (depending on the source you trust - the RCMP report said it was about $4 million). Either way, the LGR operational costs are a minuscule fraction of the entire federal budget (somewhere in the ballpark of $200 BILLION or so).

You rationale for killing the LGR is the same as buying a brand new car for $30,000 and then, because oil changes cost $50, you give it away and buy a new car.

THE MONEY WAS SPENT YEARS AGO AND CANCELLING THE LGR WILL NOT RECOVER ANY OF THE $1 BILLION IS SET-UP COSTS. GET IT?

wow, you misread my post and erupted, I didnt say 1 billion in 2003, I said in 2003, the estimate to reach a specific milestone ie 'acurate' would cost another 1 billion LIBERAL dollars, so you better multiply that by 1000 to get a real number.
