Even if they didn't want to put the camera in carry-on, they should have at least taken the memory card out and kept that on them.

Personal responsibility, anyone? Yes, there absolutely should be security for passengers' bags, but you never entrust your irreplacables to baggage handlers...

Of course personal responsibility. I don't care if it is an expensive camera that got lost or toothpaste tho. It just is unacceptable. Period.
