The Conservative Government couldn't raise the GST from 5% a little higer, so Harper promissed bigger transfer payments if they harmonized sales tax, taxing food, family necessities like diapers, and so on.

The Federal Gov't is as much to blame for the HST law in BC and Ontario as are the Provincal Liberals.

It really shows there is no difference between the two money grabbing parties.

McGuinty has been screwing Ontario taxpayers since he got into office. I hold him ultimately responsible here.

Anyone but the Liberals?

What I don't get is why is this this such a big deal in BC but no one in Ontario seems to care(or maybe just the media doesn't care).

Media doesn't care... the people do, when you tell them what is happening.

I find that many don't even know this is coming.

More likely, the HST will tax any existing taxes so the net effect will be more than 7%.

For many things there will no change at all, since we were already paying GST and PST on them. Mostly services will cost more. The reason people are outraged is that the govt outright lied before the election and then brought in the new tax right after it. Also, there used to be a $400 annual GST rebate for low income earners, that's gone now. I would have liked to see Campbell at least make this tax revenue neutral for low income earners, but he don't roll like that. If you look at his tax changes, they're all about lowering the tax rate for the highest income earners while bringing in regressive taxes and user fees that disproportionately hurt the lower income groups. I think his theory is that if he taxes them enough, poor people will just disappear.

You folks could always pursue constitutional limits on taxation as we have in California with regards to property tax.
