Why are these companies that are making $$ billions $$ each year, not accountable to have some type of "disaster plan/insuance" put into to place to control something like this from becoming worse, instead of having the government (tax $$$) paying forte clean up???

The companies will be sent a bill after the fact.

The real question, is why are we entertaining the idea of letting these rigs into the north without the same level of safety measures this rig had?

All the things they are trying to do now to fight this slick, cannot be done in the north. Ice gets in the way off booms and the water is too cold for the chemical attack they are trying.

They don't want to have to drill relief wells up there, hard to do, very expensive. An our government is right now deciding wether that is okay or not.

Read a great line today:

"Every asshole who ever chanted 'Drill baby drill' should have to report to the Gulf coast today for cleanup duty," - Bill Maher.

Don't hold your breath. Exxon still hasn't paid cent of the fines it faced for the Valdez spill (the only US spill larger than this one)and that was 21 years ago.

And never mind what's possible in the arctic, apparently, its not possible even in sub-tropic regions.

= the new definition of the capitalist state. God forbid we do anything to displease a powerful corporation, don't you know that's what socialist-communist-fascist-terrorists do?

Why stop there? What about every person that drives a car with an internal combustion engine?

BP has already received the court orders and they said they will agree to pay for the spill.

That bill will be high....

Or who still heats their house on oil... Or uses an oil based product...

Hmmm, methinks we are ALL going to pay...

Sorry but totally untrue.

That is the definition of a corporatism state, not a capitalist one. Don't mix the two.

I'm sure Bill Maher is totally independent from oil products, isn't he?

It's not just BP tho. They only rented that thing. There is another owner, and if I read correctly, it was their personnel and material too...

Yes, Transocean. The biggest in the world for oil rigs.

But well, we don't know the details of all those legal things.

I'm sure BP will take the blame, pay the bill, and get it back from Transocean. Or at least try to.

I'm pretty sure there are insurances involved too.

I've read the seal that failed was made by Halliburton (yes, Dick Cheney).

That will be a big and complicated case.
