Coaches coach, and parents .....

$1:
So many great stories surround the Brick super novice hockey tournament that it's somewhat unpleasant to write this one.

One of the exciting 10-year-olds was asked after a loss earlier in the competition why he didn't pass the puck more often.

"If you had given the puck to one of your linemates, you could have had three or four assists and your team would have won the game."

The explanation was incredibly sad: "My dad says that if I haven't got the puck, I'm not displaying my talents."

What a blame deflection here.
Parents are just as responsible for teaching spotsmanship and respect to fellow players as coaches are.
Sounds like someone just won't be happy until they can point their fingers at someone else.
In this case I would blame an angry teenager (given the facts of the case) and sure it's tragic but it could have happened in any school on any field with kids this age weather they were hockey players or not.

The main reason I quit most team sports as a teenager was because the coaches took the fun right out of it. If they weren't yelling at the team they were arguing with another coach almost as though they're doing it for themselves and not the kids who just want to have some clean competitive fun.

WDHIII WDHIII:
When you "take up" Football or rugby in High School you are TAUGHT how to tackle - in hockey youre taught how to check (from what I hear  )

"Manny Castillo was fatally injured during a May 2007 junior rugby game at Mississauga's Lorne Park Secondary School. Near the end of the game, Castillo was the victim of what Duncan has described as a "sucker tackle" by the convicted teen. Castillo was lifted off the ground and a "pile drive" forced his head to the ground. He died two days later in hospital."

Somehow I doubt thats in ANY "how to" manual....... :?

Exactly. That phrase above is the textbook definition of manslaughter, general intent homicide; intending the action causing death, not the death itself, through criminal negligence. The sadest part of this story is that the sonofabitch isn't going to do any jail time. Maybe he should have to play for the boys' team in the match against the Masters' this afternoon:

Why do I get the feeling that the judge doesn't know the difference between a rugby ball and a ball used to play pocket pool?
