Seems the Maple Leafs have insisted that the NHL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES to keep any Team out of their Territory. Further they have informed the BoG that, if this relocation is not stopped, they intend to take three (3) actions.
1. They will sue the NHL
2. The Leafs will sue Balsillie personally, and remain in court for decades, if need be.
3. If Balsillie, or ANYONE, moves a Team into Ontario, they will sue any or all of the other NHL Teams, along with their Ownership (personally), IF THEY TRAVEL INTO ONTARIO TO PLAY THE "NEW" TEAM.
No. The Leafs won't sue anyone. They want this matter handled by the league. If the courts have to rule, then they have to rule using the Canadian Comeptition Act, and that would not support Toronto's territorial claim. The Leafs best chance of keeping another team out of Ontario rests with keeping the whole thing OUT of court in Canada. If a US-court rules this to be an NHL matter, that MIGHT allow the Leafs to use their territorial veto. But if that happened, it would be Balsillie taking the thing to court. The law is on his side, not the Leafs'.
