The real problem is the existence of this ubiquitous "THEY". Our governments have simply become too big. Even those on the extreme left must recognize that government in Canada has become a runaway Frankenstein monster; created with good intent, but run amok.

If a tenth of all the waste in government was cut, there'd be AMPLE money for healthcare, education AND arts funding in Quebec. We're paying for many thousands things MUCH more frivolous than arts. The left and the right would both be pleased with the results of a good government downsizing.

"... because of the increasing debt."

It is Harper's debt.

Ok.... We're in a recession you know? Things were good two years ago, what's changed since then?

Is anyone really surprised?

Where the hell did anyone think it was going to come from eventually? It’s not going to matter what party is in control.

While I agree, there is simply nothing more eternal than a temporary govenment program to a speial interest group. I guarantee that any cuts to Indian affairs, multiculturalism or any of the big white elephants will be the club that pounds the ruling government into the ground, reguardless of side or agreement.

Harper only made a deficit to stay in power. Before the "Coalition", the budget was going to be even. He spent to keep power.

case in point:

$1:
OTTAWA — Public Works Minister Christian Paradis was caught flat-footed when a federal funding body eliminated a $325,000 grant to a major telescope and astronomy centre in his riding.

The Conservative MP and Quebec lieutenant is now scrambling to save the Mont-Mégantic Observatory, which threatens to become a symbol of the Harper government's recent cuts to research agencies.

“I'm offended and I'm angry,” Mr. Paradis said in an interview yesterday. “I was put in front of a fait accompli. I learned of the decision like everyone else, and it came as a surprise.”

There is no huge, unprotected bucket of money marked "slush fund". The only place big money can be found is in a lot of small places. This is one of them.

I agree %100. So is it fair to call him a socialist or a oportunist?
