I say good for Harper. It'd be nice to have real Colombian businesses and farmers be more able to compete in global markets. HEAR HEAR TO CHEAPER COFFEE!

Scape Scape:

did you check the date on the first article?

the second..

"Report: 90 Trade Unionists Murdered in 2007; 39 in Colombia

"A new report has found more than ninety trade unionists were murdered last year while defending workers’ rights. Thirty-nine of the murders occurred in Colombia. Guy Ryder of the International Trade Union Confederation said, "Governments have failed to do enough to protect workers’ rights, either at home or in their international diplomatic, economic and trade relations.”

says a member of the Trade Union.

did you drink any coffee today? :P

Colombian armed conflict

Plan Colombia

Leftist Rebels Hire Spanish Mercenaries

It's a narcoeconomy and the civil war goes on to this very day. I'm enjoying my double double, thanks.

Okay, so you think shutting down Free Trade with Colombia will help their civil war, when basically the FARC is based on drugs? Creating economic opportunity for their population will make farmers switch from growing coca to coffee, or fruits or something that is legal.

The civil war sucks, but we should stick our heads in the sand? Should we not trade to Afghanistan either? Or Iraq? Or Thailand and the Philippines? They all have rebellions of some sort.

And there are no labor laws. Guess what? Most developing nations have piss poor labor laws. The fact is, neither did we in the beginning, but we slowly got them through the sacrifice of brave men and women. Colombia, in time, will grow internally to get the same standards we have now. Going out and punishing them for practices will ultimately harm both economies, especially Colombia.
