That is very weird.... sounds like the skin suffered some stress/fatigue. I bet they will inspect all 747-400 for similar problems.

We are talking about Qantas here... I find that hard to beleive. No Airline in this world would chance anything like this.

Plus, we are talking about rivets right now. Why would those rivets let go????

I would love to see those pics.

If you have facebook then go to the group called "aviation photo contest"There's a few mechanics on there who post pics of bad stuff happening to planes. You may have to go through the subgroups but you will see more then enough to shock you.

I'll try and find some pics.

I don't need to join a support group to see airplane related pictures. I just safety breifing and get all the latest and greatest of the worlds avations mistakes. We get the full investigations reports along with the videos so we can learn from other people's mistakes. I have been in the field for a very long time. Nothing related to aviation supprises me anymore.

One last thing.... Airplanes don't leave the ground with missing pieces 8O

Too bad, some awesome pics on that group and it's not a crash site. Its an aviation photo contest put on by pilots with a new theme every week.I thought you may be interested.

Planes do leave the ground with missing pieces, been on a few including our own.

Leaving Vancouver Island in 1996 on WestJet we sucked in a bird on take off. Sparks and flames were shooting out of the left engine. The pilots dropped the jet back on the ground and stopped just short of the end of runway. Smoke filled the cabin. Everyone got off and the mechanics already had the front of the engine covered with tarps.

Within a half hour they let us all know that they had changed the oil and were ready to board again. I said, go fuck yourself, I'm not getting on that plane. Changed the oil? Really? The oil was damaged and that was the only thing that needed to be changed? Like fuck. I've seen what happens to a jet engine when a bird goes through it.

They kept the tarps covering the engine while the passengers boarded. Gee... I wonder why? I took a different jet back to Alberta.

Passenger jets are designed to suck in birds. The carcass got logde in the first compressor where the heated aircabin is taken from. Thus the smoke. The oviously fixed it and clean the bird off. I would have flown on the plane.

The engine was damaged. It was unbalanced. The shaking and vibration only went away when they cut the engine. My guess was they did a quick patch job in under a half hour and off they went. In my opinion it should've had a full inspection after something like that.

I understand an engine is designed to survive a bird hit but the time they took to work on it just didn't feel proper.

I don’t blame you for the decision to wait and take another plane at all, but after something like that happening and the inspection and repairs needed. It would have made that engine the safest part of the plane.
