Arrrr! There be pirates in them there waters!
So they're actually managing to hijack big ships now. Getting more and more powerful all the time.
Actually this has been going on for several years. Ships chartered by the UN to haul relief supplies are their frequent target. Cargos are stolen and show up in the markets of East Africa and the ships and their crews are ransomed frequently. The UN has protested this bitterly.
30 years back the Indonesians were chasing pirates in the Malacca Straits-----and still are. Pirates there do not receive the benefits of due process.....a situation to which I subscribe.
The Caribbean has a high incidence of hijacking of smaller craft, yachts which, after deep-sixing the occupants, are used for smuggling drugs.
The modern pirates, like the old ones, are bloodthirsty, unprincipled killers....there is nothing at all colourful about them.
