The question has to be asked again. Why weren't the countries that were already bombing in Syria hitting these obvious targets? Why did it take Britain to do it? It doesn't seem that the bombing campaign is being carried out all that seriously.

This is why.

Turkey, for one, I believe. I think even the Syrian govt. No morals in the oil business.

Nope. I don't think "we" ever had oilfields in Syria.

No, "our" oilfields are here at home. Technically we don't even need oil from the shitty parts of the world but apparently a lot of people from the death-to-Harper side of the spectrum have a big problem with that particular idea. That's why a quarter-million barrels per day get shipped into Canada from the US and also why the US ports see a Saudi or Venezuelan tanker pull up to the docks every single day.

What utter drivel. Yeah, that's why.

Public_Domain Public_Domain:
Didn't realize the story isn't based in Iraq

I figured we get oil from America for similar reasons as why we get softwood from them: because we're all-day suckers.

We get oil from them because nobody saw fit to build a pipeline back east. In typical Canadian fashion, our business interests just go for the fast buck, ie ship our oil to the US in as much quantity as we can. And our governments, both LIberal and Conservative collude with that. And the Alberta govt just was just eager to please them as well. It's also why we refine so little of our own oil, preferring to buy the refined product back from the US.

Then there's the fact we don't invest in our own oil extraction, preferring to let the Saudis and Chinese and everybody but us do it and pay a shitty royalty. Compare that to Norway. But then that would be socialism, ie the word that makes the Harper crowd flip their tops.

We as in the Canadian people are suckers because we allow the same thing to happen. We did the same thing with our trees in BC, allow companies it basically mine them, then move to greener pastures when they were finished raping here. Should have heard the screams when the NDP first moved to tighten regulations on the forest industry. But we still have tons of land that is NSR (not satisfactorily restocked) and you should see what was done to the CP land grants on Vancouver Island. Nothing will grow there until new soil is built up - how many thousand years does that take.

You want to know why our oil industry is so fucked up, look to the tightie righties and the business interests. But then you already knew that. And ask yourself why we support Saudi Arabia thru thick and thin, thru fucking up our oil industrty to supporting terrorism. It ain't the left that's doing that.

I like the part where they've been in their holy "pipelines are all evil!" mode for the past seven years and then still play dumb about their part in making sure that those pipelines never get built. Complain like crazy and pull every political card possible to prevent the construction of the safest and most cost-effective way of transporting fluids and gas, then go apeshit over the carbon bomb of the rail and tanker-truck transport the industry has to use with all the pipeline options that were permanently and deliberately choked off. Have cake, eat it too, then take the rest of it off the next guy's plate. woo-hoo! we're the greenies!

Hang on. We're not forgetting something are we?

$1:
Line 9 is an existing 762-mm (30-inch) diameter pipeline with a current capacity of approximately 240,000 barrels per day, extending from Sarnia, Ont., to Montreal. Enbridge has been operating the Line 9 pipeline safely and reliably since 1976.

Originally flowing eastward, Line 9 was reversed in 1998 as foreign oil from areas such as West Africa and the Middle East became more affordable. Currently, Line 9 transports that foreign-sourced crude in a westbound direction (Ontario and Quebec refineries currently process 18% and 90% foreign-sourced crude, respectively).

However, Western Canadian crude is now priced lower than foreign oil. And as a result, Enbridge made a successful regulatory application to the National Energy Board (NEB) over the past two years to reverse the flow of Line 9 once again.

http://www.enbridge.com/ECRAI.aspx

And then the left wing protesters started acting up. They didn't mind the oil coming in from off-shore, East-West, but they didn't like the idea of receiving Canadian oil coming from the West.

I can have Ezra tell you about it if you like. He has some good videos on it where he goes right out to the protests and lectures the left's professional protesters on how it works.
