Gollum was not inherently a bad guy. The Ring turned him into the equivalent of a drug addict. All the possessors of the Rings, even the Nazgul and the Dwarf-kings, are tragic figures because whatever they were before as individuals was destroyed by the malice inside the Rings. The real thing about the story is that Frodo, in the last moments at Mount Doom,
failed because the Ring claimed him as much as it did Gollum. Paradoxically, despite his status as an addict, if Gollum hadn't been there to stop Frodo and steal the Ring back then Sauron would have won.
