Both.

Foreign takeovers hsould be very limited, and by foreign state companies.. never.

why is this a mistake? did you know that over 80% of Nexen's assets are NOT in Canada anyway? plus the agreement was conditional to not moving headquarters etc.

These are our resources. They should not be handed over lock, stock and barrel.

IMO, all oil production should be run by Canadian companies, foreigners
can invest, but not control more than 51% of the company,
and sales to foreign State run companies should be out.

I understand my ideas are probably 20 years out of date, but I have seen
what has been done in Eastern Europe, and it isn't pretty to watch what little
sovereignty these countries had has been seriously stripped away.

We might as well stop hiding and ask the Chinese gov't to open their
Ministry office in Calgary, they can put a loudspeaker on the building
and broadcast their propaganda.
It's the same thing, and at least people will see what's really going on.


You supported the Wheat Board to protect Canadian farmers, but are happy
to let our oil walk right out the door ?

Exactly, people are getting ther assholes bunged up over nothing. This is merely an open door for cash flow. Foreign companies still have to adhere to the rules of the country.

Two things:

1) Did anyonr REALLY think a Conservative from Alberta waw going to swoop in and put the kybosh on a "done deal" that made some Alberta oil execs and thr Alberta business lobby extremely rich? Sure he put an limit on future deals with state-owned corporations (but notice he left a window open for it under "special circumstances" which is not defined) but since the China and Malaysia deals were already inked and the Alberta oil barons had already counted it as money in their pocket, did anyone really think Harper was foing to snatch food out of their mouths just as they were getting ready to swallow?

2) For the flag-waivers out there, it should be noted that 71 per cent of all companies operating in the Fort Mac oilsands area are not Canadian. Of the remaining companies that are headquartered in Canada, many are largely foreign-owned.

IKs this the one where they want to ship in the Chinese workers? Or was that a coal mine? Can't recall. That is the part I find a little more dire. A foriegn-owned mine run by foreign workers.

Harper--actually any political party--is in a tough spot with this one. You can't claim to be a free trade country and say no to fireign invenstment. And recall that Harper has already said no to a couple of big potential foriegn takeovers--that potash interest in Saskatechewan, landing rights for Air Emirates.

One of the problmes with China is that they aren;t really playing in the free market, as a planned economy. Thye will pay more than market rates to acheive their political interests. Combine it with this free trade deal they have in the works with China that allows China to sue of they feel our environemtnal and labour laws are affecting their business, and it's a bit worriesone (mind you, under NAFTA and WTO, we already put those clauses in as well--recall the issue with gasoline additive MMT and Canada getting sued by Ethylcorp for example.

That was a BC coal mine (Canadian company) that brought it the Chinese workers.
