Except we don't, the states does. Good luck with fighting that lobby. So we have to tax. If the tax brings in enough, we could subsidize fruit and veg, preferably our own industry instead of California.

Um Subsidize fruit with a tax on sugar? You do know many fruit's have sugar in them so you will end up taxing those same products that you want to subsidize. Those sweet tasting fruits are full of sugar.

I do know you are talking about processed sugar. So next time you go shopping check the back of every package in mention of sugar just add your 20% tax to it. I'm sure it will be a true eye opener for you. It was for me when I had to actually pay attention to sugar content. Sodium I had been for years. Still I'm doing good to keep what I buy at 10grams or less. Very few "healthy" foods have no sugar.

We don't want a tax on sugar because the alternative is worse.

As we have seen with the whole 'fat free/sugar free' generation, we get brutal products like Aspartame on the market and it's done nothing to curb obesity.

Don't forget that many foods that don't have sugar in them are converted into sugars when you digest them.

Do we tax them, too?

Natural sugars are quite a bit different than concentrated glucose derived from corn or cane, and the body metabolizes them differently.

Eating an apple will not give you the same glycemic increase as a can of pop.

Apples have lots of folic acid = good for your heart, as well as other nutrients and fiber. What people are talking about is taxing refined sugars, specifically when added to drinks.
