Three of 'em ARE geniuses...and that list must contain Townshend and Waters. Joe Jackson, hell, even Alan Jackson, ranks higher on the list of musical geniuses than Michael Jackson.
The word genius and the name Michael Jackson should never be used in the same sentence. He's no genius in any way, shape or form.
Why? Musical talent and kid-humping freak are two separate axes on which we can judge him. His music was ground-breaking, his Thriller video was an event and he had a 3D experience created about him, well Captain EO, at Disney. Not even Jon OR Kate has topped that yet.
At the time when he made his "best" music, and I use that term very lightly, there was a lot of ground breaking going on. His video Thriller was debuted on "Friday Night Videos" on NBC, well before the advent of Much and MTV.I know this cause a bunch of us from school got together to watch it. It was kinda cool and for the most part, just long. All video's were ground breaking at that time, they were such a new media and the only place you could watch them was...Friday Night Videos. The opinion of the time, amongst the high school kids around Vancouver anyway, cause I was DJing high school dances at the time and you get to know what people like most by the hundreds of requests you get a night, was it was shite. Very few MJ requests ever came in and when one did and it was played, often it was met with jeers or boos. He was nothing more then an eccentric....one rhinestone glove not withstanding.
Death and time should not elevate one's worth. He made a bunch of "Pop" crap for the most part and didn't, in only my opinion, leave any lasting good legacy in music. That is unless you count all the endless Box sets and retrospectives we're going to have to endure for the next 30 years.....
