They asked for refuge, we ignored them.
We had a little to do with that.

Apparently the family never applied for asylum in Canada.

So Doc, can we climb down from the guilt train now please ?
Since when did you climb on it?
They may not have properly applied for asylum, but the sister still got her MP to deliver a letter to the Minister of Immigration asking they be granted refugee status.
Does it really matter that these kids and their Mom didn't have the proper paperwork before they drowned in the Med? Does that make it any less sad?
^This.
That letter should have at least gotten a response from the Minister, and it probably didn't because it was handed to him by an NDP MP, instead of a Conseervative one (Alexander is well-known for his partisanship on the Hill).
I know when I went to my former MP (Ken Epp) about a visa problem, he looked into it and expedited the visa in two weeks, instead of the six months the consulate was telling me. Granted that was a visitor visa and not refugee status, but that is one of the duty's of your MPs - helping citizens navigate the services the government offers and helping them whenever they can.
While this horribly tragic incident isn't the fault of Alexander (the boy's dad must assume some of the guilt too), Alexander's lack of a response certainly didn't help anything and was likely a factor in Tima sending $5000 to him so he could get the hell out of dodge (especially after they rejected her other brother's application).
