I never wore one as a kid, and I hate wearing them to this day.
However, now that I have a daughter, I don't really have a choice. It'd be hypocritical of me to say, "You have to wear one for safety reasons but I don't."

My kids used to fight wearing them as well. Partially because they're uncomfortable (agreed), but also I'd get, "I look retarded!". My reply, "How cool do you think you're gonna look when you're 20 years old and someone's wiping your ass for you because you can't any more as a result of your brain injuries? But yeah, you're right, you looked sooooo much cooler without the skid lid."
