andyt andyt: And the guy is advocating using those pictures to pressure people to turn themselves in. He's just saying that people should be careful about what they label people in those pics who have been convicted of nothing. And that makes no sense. If you can't tell that the individuals in those pictures are committing criminal acts, then....well what can I say? Calling somebody in a picture a criminal because he's committing a criminal act is not "illegal".

Khar Khar: Zipperfish got away with quite a few disparaging remarks on Harper. He would not have gotten away with a lot of disparaging remarks on EyeBrock. Eyebrock? Plonker. And though I may have criticized Harper, I don't think I've ever done so in a disrespectful way. I used to take it personal wiht George W Bush though (as Thanos well remembers on another forum we inhabited together), but over time I hope I've learned not to take it all on the chin.

Zipperfish Zipperfish: You know, I've seen signposts and barricades and axes and hammers. But a pillow, dude? I just saw that! Maybe he came for the post-game pillow fight? Now that would've been awesome! ![Drink up [B-o]](./images/smilies/drinkup.gif)

andyt andyt: And you're a typical reactionary, hang em high before we even have the evidence. He's talking about convicting people before they are found guilty, not police operations. I don't know what it is with you right wingers who seem to want to do away with the court system and go back to vigilante justice. Until it involves you or someone you care about of course. andyt andyt: Good. If it was him rioting, I hope they keep him off the team aside from whatever legal slap on the wrist he might get. Uh-huh...

Olympic rioters being discharged and at the end, what the police say might happen to the newest Vancouver rioters. Can't say I'm surprised. More fuel for the shaming sites, people continue to see no justice from the courts.

A DOUBLE editorial today in the Vancouver Sun lambasting the name-and-shame sites. "Mehtinks thou doth protest too much." When you think about it, social media are a competitor with tradational media, and I wonder if that's why they've set their sights on social media.
They like to raise, over and over again, how the name-and-shame "online mob" are as bad as the rioters. Like venting online is as bad as looting, burning, beating strangers and attacking police officers. Uh-huh. Suuuuurrrrre.
Or they bring up, ad nauseum, that poor Nathan Kotylak and his family had to flee their home. Kotylak's family are guilty of nothing (actually neither is Nathan at this point) and its a shame they've been run from their home. But every single newspaper and news channel had Nathan Kotylak plastered all over it, so why would the traditional media single out the social media as being responsible for the treats the Kotylaks have received?
Oh, because "somebody posted his address online"? Yeah, like it would be so hard to track down the address of someone when you already knew his name and where he was from. It's called a phone book. Anybody could look in one and find this guy's address in about three seconds. It's a trivial exercise.

People forget that social media is the first thing employers check for any new hires these days. Most companies have policies about FB etc and linkage to the person's employers, rules and punishments for any contraventions.
My company makes gratuitous use of FB for an array of things and a couple of years ago an employee was fired within probation for conduct deemed unbecoming on FB.
So called traditional media hits FB as soon as name is released for ANYTHING. Mind you, most media outlets barely research a story past FB or wikipedia these days.

Rumour Control is in charge of our news in the brave new world of the 21st century. All of which is why I've NEVER had a Facebook or MySpace page. This past week I even deleted my Linked-In account when I started getting "spear phishing" spam mail that was sourced to content from my Linked-In. There's been reports on the net now of people losing jobs or not getting hired not because of what was on their MySpace or Facebook page but because of what was on their friend's pages!I've also decided that I don't want some liberal overly-sensitive HR department screening me because of what would inevitably be on any such page of mine. I doubt they'd like my pro-gun, conservative attitudes.
